Wild East Women’s work days on the A.T. can motivate, empower, and inspire more women to pick up the tools and become stewards for a more equitable volunteer corps. This particular event will be taking place on Saturday, June 1 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
If you are coming from Roanoke/Salem, the group will be meeting at the Park & Ride near Orange Market in Salem (1823 Thompson Memorial Dr, Roanoke, VA 24019) at 8 a.m. where we will carpool. Participants also have the option to at Caldwell Fields group campsite on VA-621/Upper Craig Creek Road at 8:45 am. (Coordinates: 37.337808, -80.325098)
The A.T. follows the crest of Sinking Creek Mountain for 5 miles, traversing several rock ledges which offer great views into Craig Creek Valley and the mountains beyond. Greenbrier and blackberry brambles grow along the ledges, and need to be cut back every year. We'll hike in with weedeaters, swingblades, and loppers to cut back the seasonal growth so hikers can cruise through and enjoy the views without a scratch.
Please note that no matter how warm it is, you'll need long pants and sleeves to safely remove these thorny plants. Also, this work day involves a strenuous hike of about 6 miles, including some very steep terrain which gets harder when carrying tools.
We'll start the day with a steep, uphill bushwhack of about a quarter mile to get to the A.T. about 2 miles south of Niday Shelter. We'll follow the A.T. southbound/uphill to the top of the ridge, and work our way along the ridge to the Sarver Hollow Shelter side trail. We'll hike out by way of the extremely steep and little-used Sarver Trail, checking on the shelter as we go by. Most of the hike along the ridge is easy, but there is some uneven footing along the rock ledges which gets more challenging when wet.
Please be sure to wear long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy boots. Also be sure to bring lunch plenty of snacks and water for the day, as well as sunscreen, bug spray, and a rain jacket.
