Position Summary

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) is seeking a Market Research Intern to assist in the Marketing and Communications Department. This internship entails researching, collecting and analyzing data in order to strengthen and leverage the ATC brand and its key messages to educate and increase awareness for the organization.


Key projects include:

  • Surveying with key audience members (the ATC’s membership, volunteers, hikers, young families) to better understand the following:
  • How each segment became involved with the A.T. and the ATC (if applicable)
  • What programs/issues are most important to them
  • Perceptions of the A.T. and the ATC brand
  • What motivates giving and volunteerism
  • Examining current means of communications and providing a recommendation on how to increase engagement with the ATC’s target audience


At the end of the internship, this individual will learn how to:

  • Collect and analyze data
  • Draft un-bias surveys to gather key pieces of information to better understand ATC’s target audience
  • Work along side of senior management and multiple departments within the organization
  • Communicate with ATC stakeholders including 45,000+ members and 6,000+ volunteers
  • Strengthen your communications, research, marketing, and time management skills
  • Further expand your network in the nonprofit conservation field

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collect data on ATC’s membership, volunteers, and the hiking community
  • Drafts surveys to better understand the needs and wants of ATC’s stakeholders
  • Analyze data and consolidate information into actionable items, reports, and presentations
  • Interpret data and make recommendations to achieve objectives
  • Evaluate ATC’s marketing and communication program
  • Archive photos on ATC’s online photo database
  • Other duties assigned 

  • Background in marketing, statistics, research analysis or other related disciplines
  • Strong numerical, analytical, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of data collection methods (polls, focus groups, surveys, etc.)
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in performance
  • Highly self-motivated individual
  • Desire to learn and contribute

Physical Demands
  • Working on the computer for prolonged periods
  • Ability to communicate with individuals by phone, e-mail and in person
  • Sitting for prolonged periods
  • Shared/open office environment with modest noise level
