Position Summary:

LAND PROTECTION PROGRAM MISSION

The mission of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) Land Protection Program is to enhance the primitive outdoor recreational experience of the Appalachian Trail through the protection of Appalachian Trail lands. These include the Trail itself, its immediate corridor, lands with significant ecological or cultural value, and surrounding view sheds and soundscapes. Further protection will be provided through promotion of compatible land uses in harmony with the natural, scenic, historic, and cultural values that surrounding lands contribute to the visitor experience. ATC Lands are the fee and easement parcels that ATC manages to achieve its mission.  ATC Lands occur in all 14 states through which the Appalachian Trail traverses.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The ATC Lands Stewardship Intern will conduct activities that assist ATC in fulfilling the requirements of Land Trust Alliance Standards and Practices; Chapters 11 and 12; http://www.landtrustalliance.org/training/accreditation/2010-accreditation-indicator-practices.  The Intern shall perform duties that assist the Land Protection Manager in monitoring, managing, and general stewardship administration of ATC fee-owned and easement lands. The position requires office and field work. Field work will require travelling to properties in Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Virginia. 
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Delineate, mark, maintain, and post signs on boundaries of selected ATC tracts; includes repainting deteriorated and faded boundary line trees and witness trees, posting signs, and clearing boundary lines of overgrowth

Monitor conservation easements and fee-owned lands as assigned; populate monitoring forms

File monitoring forms in digital and hard copy formats

Populate monitoring spreadsheet to maintain as current and to provide a documented track record

Draft landowner response letters for monitoring actions

Perform electronic file management and administration for collected data and photographs

Assist with boundary recovery, marking, and clearing

Qualifications:

Training, education, or Associates or higher Degree in forestry, natural resources management, park and recreation, or related field is desirable

Possess strong administrative and organizational skills

Diligence in completing projects in a timely manner with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, Google Earth, and minimal ARC GIS knowledge

Experience working with survey data, plat maps, and deeds, and basic field surveying techniques

Demonstrated proficiency with map and compass to interpret survey plats and follow compass bearings

Physical Demands:

Requires work in a multi-person office setting using computers and office equipment

Requires work in the outdoors in a field setting with steep hillsides, no trails, and dense brush

Requires moderate to strenuous hiking

Schedule to be determined; however schedule will fit into a standard office work week of 9am to 5pm, Monday thru Friday; occasional weekend work may be required

This Internship runs from May - August ​2017.
