Tom Banks, originally from Massachusetts, has worked for more than 30 years as a ranger throughout the United States with the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and state parks, conducting interpretation and environmental education, wilderness trails and campsite management, and emergency services. A member and former chair of the Trail and Camping Committee, he recently produced and directed a series of Leave No Trace videos for the Appalachian Trail. He is a member of the Maine Appalachian Trail Club and the Nantahala Hiking Club. Tom holds degrees in outdoor recreation, environmental science, and teaching. He section-hiked the Appalachian Trail (2004–2013), enjoys long-distance backpacking throughout the United States and Europe, and has impersonated John Muir in storytelling performances since 1983.
